Did you know this about the ebm pioneers the neon judgement?
Formed in Belgium in 1981, The Neon Judgement was a new wave band founded by Dirk Da Davo (Dirk Timmermans) and TB Frank (Frank Vloeberghs).
The band is considered pioneers of Electronic Body Music - EBM for their combination of industrial and electro sounds.
They were also known for adding other cultures into their music "to make it like opposites: yin and yang." You can hear sounds such as dubstep in some of their music, and the song Mafu Cage had an African vibe. The band took their music "song by song."
They released the infamous Cockerill-Sombre EP containing the dance-floor smash "The Fashion Party" for Anything but Records Label. Due to the enormous success of the release, the band was signed to the Belgian Indie Label – Play It Again Sam.
The Neon Judgement recorded most of their music with Play It Again Sam. Their first track with the label was Mafu Cage in 1986.
In 1987 the band celebrated their first American release with "Horny As Hell," a sex-based concept album. It was composed in an old factory building, and Dirk Da Davo said that you could hear the surroundings listening to the album.
The band released "Blood and Thunder" in 1989, "The Insult" in 1990, and "Are You Real?" In 1992.
Dirk Da Dava said that the record company wanted the band to grow into a commercial "charts band." After a lot of their demos of the "Are You Real" album got rejected by the label, Da Dava stated that they didn't know the music anymore and that the album was made to satisfy the record company. After the album didn't perform well, the band was dropped by the label.
The duo decided to take a 3-year break in 1992 and returned in 1995 with the release of an LP – "At Devil's Fork" with percussionist Ben Forceville. For the track recording, the band rented a wooden house in the middle of the Belgian Ardennes.
In 1998 the band stopped performing once again. They didn't come back together until 2004, when the duo performed live and toured until 2006 to promote a series of re-releases and remixes of their original material.
The Neon Judgement played at the Machina Festival at the Broadway Club in São Paulo, Brazil.
In November 2005 and Fiber Records released a DVD, The Neon Judgement – Live at Machina Festival in 2005 featuring the whole concert of 13 songs.
The duo also released a vintage 2 Disk CD Box in 2005
The band released the compilation album Redbox in 2007, which contains a new cover version of "Heroes" by David Bowie.
They also released another album Smack, in 2009.
In an interview by François Zappa written in El Garaje de Frank, Dirk Da Davo described that when the band played live, it was "kicking ass music, some hard electro punk-like music, the stage filled with smoke and stroboscope lights, lots of bass in the sound and two guys in black leather and dark shades."
Dirk Da Davo started his record label Dancedelic-D, and he reworks old classics and composes new material.
