Did you know this about the ebm pioneers Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft?
Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft or DAF, meaning German-American Friendship was a German-based band of intense electro punks
The band, which started with five members, gradually became a band of just two remaining members – Gabi Delgado Lopez and Robert Görl.
Since Gabi was born in Spain, DAF seamlessly combined the Spanish & German electro-punk scene.
The band's homo-erotic lyrics and image invited both attention and criticism and angered religious groups.
The pair's sexuality and relationship were often questioned, but it appeared that Delgado-López is bisexual, while Görl is seemingly straight.
Together the duo released DAF's third album in 1981's Alles Ist Gut, which was a hit and secured the band's identity. DAF was one of the top five biggest-selling acts in Germany that year.
The band's hit song from the album, "Der Mussolini," triggered outrage and accusations of fascism because the song repeatedly says "Tanz der Mussolini" ("dance of Mussolini") and "Tanz der Adolf Hitler." But, they were imitating the dictator's speech and rigid marching style while reducing them to a novelty dancefloor fad.
The track was remade by Atrocity in 1997 and by KMFDM in 2006.
The duo appeared on the NME Magazine cover that same year on 28/11/81.
DAF split in the middle of the recording of "Für Immer" in 1982, and each member released solo albums: Delgado - Mistress with Virgin Media, and Görl - Night Full of Tension with Mute records.
The band had always had an agreement not to create music in English, but in 1985 when the duo reunited, they recorded their first English album - 1st Step to Heaven to break their own rules.
Using the DAF name, Gabi Delgado recorded the single The Gun with Klaus Jankuhn – the song was supposedly the first-ever German techno track.
The band came to be regarded as a forerunner of the techno and EBM scene
Later on, legendary BBC Radio DJ John Peel famously called DAF the "Godfathers of Techno."
In 1989, Görl was involved in a car accident and subsequently moved to Asia, where he took part in Buddhist seclusion for around three years.
Following the 2003 Iraq invasions by the United States, Görl and Delgado reunited to record "Der Sherriff," an anti-American song aimed at the Geoge W. Bush administration.
Their music was said to be crucial in the development of Detroit techno and Chicago house.
DAF reformed in 2003 to record their album Fünfzehn Neue DAF – Lieder (Fifteen New DAF songs); their style had shifted to a fusion of Görl's new Techno style and Gabi's original vocals
In 2008 the duo joined together once again for a 30th-anniversary tour
The band released a new single named "Du bist DAF", in 2010 which they limited the single to 2010 copies.
In 2017 Miriam Spies and Rudi Esch wrote and published an authorized biography about the band called "Das ist DAF"; however, this is not currently available in English.
Patrik Sampler's 2017 novel "The Ocean Container" also refers the duos single "Greif Nach Den Sternen" (Reach for the stars)
