Jam On It
By Newcleus
Brooklyn-based collective Newcleus, already known for their thrilling, otherworldly production from 1983' "Jam On Revenge" (The Wikki-Wikki Song), had an atmosphere that could be described as sensual cosmic funk, came up a year later with a flawlessly produced song "Jam On It" as their 5th single release.
It is a pure dancefloor burner that is still being remixed and released in many different styles and an essential record in every electro and hip hop disco bag. If there are some breakdancers on the dancefloor, throw this one and watch electrofunk heat up the party!
Producers Joe Webb and Frank Fair worked on Newcleus material, both singles and albums released on Sunnyview record label.
"Jam On it" is a pure electrofunk experience, the bass line and spirited funky ride with vocals from outer space gave it a unique depth. Sound-wise, "Jam On It" was a step forward in terms of production. The famous Roland TR-808 is programmed, produced, and mixed so well that you could listen to this beat over and over and enjoy it every time.
On the first listening, it sounds like that funky bassline is played with a Minimoog. However, it was done with a "Sequential Pro One", a legendary electronic synthesizer developed by "Sequential Circuits".
The bassline is so massive that it will make you shake from the first beat. It became so recognizable that it was sampled a countless number of times.
There is another legendary instrument used in "Jam On It" and it was Roland TB-303. It was used for an arpeggiator in a way that was fresh. The 303 could be heard mostly in Disco or Acid but, in this song, it fills the groove of the beat in such a way that it will melt your shoes.
The complete structure followed some previous iconic hip hop tracks but originally crafted and mixed beat, cutting claps, funky bass, and vocals like outer space made this one stand out.
It's a cosmic-driven song that shines with improvisation and an authentic funk ride that traveled from the future.
"Jam On It" is a legendary track that was played in every underground club in every corner of the world, and it will still be played for many decades to come.
When you look back song's legacy, "Jam On It," which is old almost 40 years now, it has influenced so much dance music we hear today that it is inevitable that you will love playing it!
