Brothers

Song by D.A.F.

"Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft" aka D.A.F. was a German electro-punk project from Düsseldorf. Formed in 1978 by Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López (vocals), Robert Görl (drums, percussion, electronic instruments), Kurt Dahlke (electronic instruments), Michael Kemner (bass-guitar) and Wolfgang Spelmans (guitar). Kurt Dahlke was replaced by Chrislo Haas in 1979.

DAF was probably one of the most important German bands alongside Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and CAN.

Their influence is present in many styles and genres throughout the '80s, '90s, '00, and even music nowadays.

The band immediately got the public's attention after signing their album "Alles ist gut" to a major record publisher, "Virgin" in 1981. Until 1985 they released two albums and 12 single releases on Virgin, Mute, and other labels.

A shift of their primary Industrial roots and sound could be noticed on the release of "Brothers," an opening Maxi single of "Dean Records" in 1985. Dean Records is a German label distributed in Europe by RCA.

The lovely fusion of their previous Industrial and EBM influence presented through Disco's scope, a more commercial genre, with new sound engineers led the band to a new musical approach.

"Brothers" is hard to put into a specific music genre.

It is a mixture of almost every electronic music genre up to date, including Electro, Synthpop, Disco in terms of structure, instrument choice, composition, and production.

It is an upbeat Synth-Disco track with a "Moroderish" vibe almost on the edge of Hi-NRG with early House music pieces.

The track is flawlessly produced and engineered even for today's standards. It was written and produced by Gabi and Robert and recorded and mixed by Tom Thiel; however, there are some issues with the releases with Gabi's mix.

"Brothers" was successful in the underground indie scene in Europe, and issues were also released on UK's "Illuminated Records" and "Priority Records," French "Vogue" and different divisions of Dean Records.

DAF was highly anticipated in European underground clubs. After the "Brothers," they released many stunning pieces like "Absolute Body Control," "The Gun," etc., which still rock the underground clubs across the world. Many artists were influenced by the work of "Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft," and their work can be recognized in most electronic music genres today.

The most considerable influence today can be heard in Techno and Electro. Still, you can say one thing for sure that DAF were the pioneers of "Electroclash" that came in the late '90s and is a fusion of 80s electro, new wave, and synth-pop with the 90s techno electropop, and other electronic dance music.

DAF was so ahead of time, and the music they released will last forever. It is a must-know band for any Techno and Electro music lover, a piece of history that will inspire you.

Brothers is a good starting point for discovering the band; following up with Absolute Body Control, The Gun, and the album "1st Step To Heaven" will be a perfect playlist to blend into their sound.
