Joe Bataan was born Bataan Nitollano Nov 14, 1942 in East Harlem.
For a short period, he was the leader of the Puerto Rican street gang "Dragons."
In 1965 after being released from prison on a stolen car charge, he focused on music and formed Joe Bataan and the Latin Swingers.
Latin Boogaloo and African American Doo-Wop influenced him.
Signed with Fania Records in 1966, and released a Latin dance cover of "Gypsy Woman" by The Impressions.
In 2005, he and Daniel Collas released "Call My Name."
