Do what you wanna do
by T-Connection
They signed to TK Records, after moving to Miami and released many funky disco classics. TK Records was founded by the producer Henry Stone and was named after recording engineer Terry Kane. The band was band leader Theophilus Coakley, Kirkwood Coakley (bass and drums), David Mackey (guitar), and Anthony Flowers (drums and percussion).
The band broke up in the early '80s, although they left quite extraordinary music for less than ten years of work. They have released eight studio albums and over 50 single EP's and have scored two hits on the "Billboard Hot 100" between 1977 and 1979.
"Do What You Wanna Do" was probably their most successful song that has hit the #1 spot on the "US Hot Dance Music/Club Play" chart and has topped "UK Single Charts" on #11.
The song was released as a single EP and on the album, "Magic," which they released the same year. Both the EP and Album were major successes. They were reissued by different labels and divisions globally, from the US and Canada to Italy and UK, Colombia, South Africa, Japan, Peru, Netherlands, and so on...
Production-wise "Do What You Wanna Do" is a masterpiece. Flawlessly recorded drums, congas, and slap bass make a funky groove that will make you outwear any dancing shoes. Funky Rhodes and Hammond are so nicely placed in the stereo, and with the rhythm guitar, filling the song's bridge with another dimension of sound.
Most of the songs in that era had a closing lead solo, but in this one, instead of guitar, they have picked a Minimoog to be their instrument of choice. This is a culmination of the song, and it marks it as a special space-funk that is primarily heard in fresh productions nowadays.
"Do What You Wanna Do" is an inspiring piece in every sense, composition, recording, and production-wise it has no age.
